Gone are the days in Ghana when young girls are kept in the home only to cook and maintain. In todays 21st century, all parents are fighting tooth and nail to keep their girl child in school. They believe that if these girls are given the same opportunity as the boys, they can attain much more by also impacting in their children.
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics indicated in their UIS data that 47.43% of girls got enrolled into the primary level as at 2003.
This has encouraged most girls to learn hard in order to make a mark in what they do. Extraordinary women like Her Royal Majesty Lady Julia Osei Tutu; a renowned lawyer and wife of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Mrs. Marilyn Owusu; CEO of ACE Consult, Sandi Owusu; a nurse by profession and CEO of Diva Delicious, Dzigbordi K. Dosoo; CEO of Allure Africa Group and many others are typical examples of how far educating the girl child can go.
Though they never had it easy but they still persisted to attain the enviable and respected positions they find themselves today. Education today I believe is taking a new trend as the world also keeps changing.
Dr. James Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey of blessed memory said; “If you educate a man you simply educate an individual but if you educate a woman you educate a family”. With this I say girl child education is key to national development.
